Week 83

A picture of the place you want to spend the most time.

I don't think I can find a photo, mine or otherwise, that would portray where I want to spend the majority of my time. Instead, I will attempt to paint you a picture...

With wide, sweeping strokes, the lightest of white, pearly and somewhat translucent, would be the light of life.

I want to live in the light.

Sweet hues of light blue, lavender and pink represent freely given friendship and acceptance.

I want to live with acceptance and true, unconditional love.

Splashes of bright colors - yellow, orange and green - punctuate the days with new experiences and things to learn.

I want to live in a place where new ideas are embraced and fresh opportunities are welcomed.

Deep and comfortable darker hues find their way onto my canvas; soft brown and warm burgundy...deep turquoise and emerald green. All these speak of the abiding feeling of home and belonging.

I want to live in a place where I belong.

Dark accents of black only add to the definition of the place I want to spend the majority of my time. Clearly defined boundaries of right and wrong give life purpose and meaning.

I want to live in a place where righteousness, justice and love rule the day.

What a painting. Yeah, that's where I want to spend the majority of my time.
It could be just a dream, but hope springs eternal...at least it does for me.

Week 82

A picture of the place you spend the most time.

I definitely spend a lot of time in my study. I am blessed with such a peaceful place to be, truly.

I believe it is also the place the cats spend the bulk of their time, as well.

Week 80

A pic of summertime, eh?

How in the world can you sum up summertime in one pic?

Summer is warm sunshine and birds singing.

Summer is love affairs and sharing sunsets.

Summer is sunglasses and flip-flops.

Summer is children laughing and cruising with the top down.

Summer is slurpees, barbeque and potato salad.

Summer is...color. Fabulous color.

Summer is strolling through the rose garden in glorious sunshine, snappin' pics of the amazing signature of the Creator on stems.

Summer is...heavenly.

One must maintain a little bittle of summer, even in the middle of winter.
~Henry David Thoreau

I fell for her in summer, my lovely summer girl,
From summer she is made, my lovely summer girl,
I’d love to spend a winter with my lovely summer girl,
But I’m never warm enough for my lovely summer girl,
It’s summer when she smiles, I’m laughing like a child,
It’s the summer of our lives; we’ll contain it for a while
She holds the heat, the breeze of summer in the circle of her hand
I’d be happy with this summer if it’s all we ever had.
~Maggie Stiefvater, Shiver

Summer afternoon - summer afternoon;
to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.
~Henry James

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.
~F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

I almost wish we were butterflies and liv'd but three summer days -
three such days with you I could fill with more delight
than fifty common years could ever contain.
~John Keats, Bright Star: Love Letters and Poems of John Keats to Fanny Brawne

I know I am but summer to your heart, and not the full four seasons of the year.
~Edna St. Vincent Millay

It's a smile, it's a kiss, it's a sip of wine ... it's summertime!
~Kenny Chesney

Let us dance in the sun, wearing wild flowers in our hair...
~Susan Polis Schutz

“A man says a lot of things in summer he doesn't mean in winter.”
~Patricia Briggs, Dragon Blood

Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence.
Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberance.
Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence.
Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.
~Yoko Ono

One swallow does not make a summer,
neither does one fine day;
similarly one day or brief time of happiness does not make a person entirely happy.
~Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics

“Come with me,' Mom says.
To the library.
Books and summertime
go together.”
~Lisa Schroeder, I Heart You, You Haunt Me

Summer will end soon enough, and childhood as well.
~George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

My old grandmother always used to say,
Summer friends will melt away like summer snows,
but winter friends are friends forever.
~George R.R. Martin

If it could only be like this always – always summer,
always alone, the fruit always ripe
and Aloysius in a good temper...
~Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited

Summer bachelors like summer breezes,
are never as cool as they pretend to be.
~Nora Ephron

The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.
~Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

Summertime is always the best of what might be.
~Charles Bowden

Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people. For those few months, you’re not required to be who everyone thinks you are, and that cut-grass smell in the air and the chance to dive into the deep end of a pool give you a courage you don’t have the rest of the year. You can be grateful and easy, with no eyes on you, and no past. Summer just opens the door and lets you out.
~Deb Caletti, Honey, Baby, Sweetheart

Why is summer mist romantic and autumn mist just sad?
~Dodie Smith, I Capture the Castle

Week 79

Well, I was supposed to be posting something that showed my handwriting from my youth.

Hmmmm.

Unfortunately, couldn't come up with much. Well, truly, I came up with nothing.

I know there is handwriting of mine somewhere, just not here. At least, any I can find. *frown*

I decided to take a walkabout my house and see what I could find from my youth. Amazing what you see when you are looking...

the little red deer I painted in Kindergarten...
it held a place of honor on the family mantle for decades

a piece of memorabilia from my nursery, c. 1965

My grandmother decorated eggshells - I have one of them.
It's a goose egg made into a small velvet jewelry box.

my crazy quilt from my mother, c. 1977-ish

birthday card in my mother's hand, c. 2005

driver's license, c. 1990

homemade dolls made by my grandmother,
Penny Jean and Jimmy Joe
c. 1972-ish

Week 78

An example of your handwriting...

Scrawl. That is the only way I can describe my handwriting. Usually only to be deciphered by myself, this sample is actually somewhat legible. My children hate it when I write them a note, due to the script; it would seem that longhand script is a thing of the past, especially to the next generation. Amazing.

This is taken from some introductory lecture notes of my week-long course on the Dead Sea Scrolls. I tried to use my computer to take notes, but determined it to be much faster and more efficient for me to use the tried-and-true method of steno pad and pencil. Yet another confirmation of my, um...experience level.

Week 77

This one is pretty close to ten years, I'm thinkin'...

Yom Kippur, with my buddy Lisa.

We are lookin' pretty happy for a day of affliction!

Honestly, I was just happy to be there.
There is a certain type of joy that comes with fellowship.

This is what it looks like.

Here's another pic - definitely from Summer '02

Definitely look younger there (and dare I say thinner?)

That's what ten years and a lot of heartbreak does to a person.

Week 76

A picture you captured totally by accident.

Well, I'm of the mind that all photography is fluke-y. Either you are trying too hard or not hard enough. And then, sometimes, you just get smack lucky.

@ Multnomah Falls, OR
I didn't even see that person
when I took the shot!

my cats are all camera-shy...
well, more like camera-irritated.

I have no idea how I captured this - cool!

One of my faves from the road trip...haha!

Week 75

A picture you captured of a stranger's child.

How can you not smile when you see these younglings looking so forward to the Starlight Parade? Look, they are even practicing their expert waving and watching skills! So cute!

And, below, a true youngling anticipating his Padawan days...

Week 74

A picture of three things your spouse loves.

ball caps, huntin' mags and the remote...just to name a few

And, what does a good ole boy truly love?

Pick-up trucks and cigarettes

huntin' and fishin' and campin' and hikin'

giant bonfires and the necessary bottle of Jack

Big, juicy steaks and chocolate midnight snacks

Shoot-em-up movies and Charlie Daniels cranked up loud...

and doesn't everyone ride their John Deere without a shirt in your town?

Yepper, that's my southern hubby alright.

Week 73

A picture of three things you love.

Alrighty, here's three things; Star Wars (especially Obi-Wan's starfighter), really cool reading glasses (love the dramatic removal!) and my true soul-mate, LipSmacker.

Love, love, love!

Week 72

A picture of you as a baby.

OK, here's the basic baby portrait.

This one must have been pretty early, perhaps first coming home.
I'm pretty beat up; Mom and I had a hard delivery, that's for sure.
The best part about this shot is, of course, the hands that my dad no longer has.
He was to lose them in a construction accident about four years later.

(Oh my...do you see that tattoo?
Amazingly, no one thought my father was evil because of it...)

Me and my Grandpa Jones sitting on the davenport
at Gramma & Bampa's house.

(Just for the record, Grampa had a tattoo, as well. Go figure.
He also was not evil.)

Me & Grampa again...he's trying to teach me something.
Obviously, Gramma is being rather distracting and taking my pic.
Or, maybe my hair was buggin' me...who knows?

Oh my gosh, and you thought your mother dressed you funny?
Admittedly, I'm scarred for life.

Although, I seem pretty happy about it here... haha!
At least my brother had to partake in the weirdness, too.
Now, that's what Mom meant by smiling too big!

Week 71
